  • Is a prescription from the doctor needed to get started with physical therapy?

To summarize, under Direct Access a patient may seek physical therapy evaluation and treatment without a referral from a physician. According to AB-2423, California legislature authorizes a patient to directly access physical therapy for treatment within the scope of practice of physical therapy. However, the treatment limits the physical therapist from treating beyond 45 calendar days or 12 visits, whichever comes first. A doctor’s approval would then be required to continue the patient’s plan of care.
